Le XVIe siècle des humanistes a produit le premier discours savant sur les usages mortuaires des anciens et des peuples lointains. Il a contribué, surtout, à l'élaboration et à la codification de rites funéraires d'un extraordinaire raffinement au sein des cours princières, convoquant, en une même intention autant politique que spirituelle, tous les arts et façonnant une multitude d'ouvrages artistiques et littéraires destinés à honorer les défunts, à les préserver de l'oubli et à assurer leur gloire, à consoler les vivants, en leur rappelant la vulnérabilité de l'homme tout en célébrant, par le culte des morts, les forces de la vie. Vingt-quatre études analysent le cérémonial funéraire, en France, en Italie, au Portugal, en Autriche, en Lorraine et à Genève, les tombeaux des Habsbourg, ceux des Guises et des Gouffier, les livres de pompes funèbres ; elles narrent l'histoire de la tradition savante et celle des formes littéraires funéraires, elles exposent les polémiques religieuses et révèlent l'ampleur de la réaction au néo-paganisme de ces cérémonies. La centaine d'illustrations ont fait l'objet d'une considération soutenue, qu'il s'agisse de celles de monuments, de sculptures, de reliures de deuil ou des suites gravées tirées des recueils de Porcacchi et de Woeiriot.
